Yesterday I read a very short, 5th grade level book, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (the author of The Giver). The book was about a 10 year old girl living in Denmark during the Holocaust. She and her family helps her Jewish friend and parents escape Nazi ruled Denmark to the free country of Sweden. The book showed the simple things that the Danish had to do without, such as butter and sugar. The girl's little sister wished for a pink frosted cupcake. When she had to get new shoes, she was embarassed that they were made of fish scales.
